Neither smartphone nor app-phone: net-phone

Recently David Pogue suggested smartphones like the iPhone should be called app-phone instead. I think focussing on the apps is wrong. For me, the thing that the iPhone does better than most other phones is internet access. The iphone is a net-phone. It is your mobile internet terminal. But it’s more than that, it’s also the device that you use to feed data into the internet: location, direction, pictures, etc.

Modern smartphones are your connector to the internet. Most applications that are installed are user interfaces to services on the internet. SOA UI’s as some would call them. Internet access is the killer app for these devices, talking is only secondary. So i suggest we call them net-phones.
